Twenty years ago India was still generally thought of as an archetypal developing country, home to the largest number of poor people of any country in the world, and beset by problems of low economic growth, casteism and violent religious conflict. These are the big questions addressed in this book by three scholars who have lived and researched in different parts of India during the period of this great transformation.

Each of the 13 chapters seeks to answer a particular question: When and why did India take off? How did a weak state promote audacious reform? Is government in India becoming more responsive (and to whom)? Does India have a civil society? Does caste still matter? Why is India threatened by a Maoist insurgency? In addressing these and other pressing questions, the authors take full account of vibrant new scholarship that has emerged over the past decade or so, both from Indian writers and India specialists, and from social scientists who have studied India in a comparative context.

Good - but not for everyone

This is a very informative book, but it is not for everyone. If you want to know something about the politics, economy, and emerging culture of caste, then this book will give you some good information on that. It is very much involved in quantitative methods, and concerned with situating itself in the literature in the field. For this reason, it may not be for everyone. At the senior level of college or in graduate school I could see this book having the most use. Others, who are not as professionally involved, may want something more friendly or readable. The writing style is not the best – at times it seems empty, but at others it is insightful and gives some rich data. If you think you can get past any or all these limitations, then this book may be for you.

Though the authors are quick to promote their book as not offering a comprehensive review of India in terms of politics, economics, and society (forget foreign policy altogether), their comparison of India's caste system with "apartheid" in Israel, will win them few admirers outside British academia.

About the Author
A chemist by training, Gerhard Gottschalk received his PhD in microbiology in 1963 from the University of G?ttingen, Germany, before becoming a post-doc at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1970 he was made a full professor for microbiology in G?ttingen, where he also served as president between 1975 and 1976. He was a visiting professor in UC Davis in 1973 and UC Berkeley in 1979, and head of the Laboratory for Genome Analysis
at the Institute of Microbiology and Genetics in G?ttingen from 1999 to 2007. He has received numerous awards, including the Philip Morris Prize for cutting-edge technology, the Winogradsky Medal, the Emil von Behring Prize and the first class German National Medal of Honor. Professor Gottschalk is a member of the G?ttingen Academy of Sciences, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, an honorary member of the
Israeli Society of Microbiology, and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He was president of All European Academies (ALLEA) from 1998 to 2000 and president of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities from 2003 to 2007.

Excellent text. The content is similar to other general microbiology texts but presented in a unique and more engaging manner. The body of the text is presented as a conversation where a microbiologist responds to questions from an intelligent non-scientist. The explanations are clear and include quotes from leading microbiologists. More detailed information is included in a second section. As a bonus, it costs less than half what other intro texts go for.

Too little information -- too much information

I was a little disappointed by this book, but that could be because I was expecting something else. I was hoping for a general overview over micobes, but this book went too deep many times so that I lost interest. I felt like in biology class back in school. Way too much information unless you really, really want to study this subject. I skipped parts of some chapters because I really didn't care for the chemical intricacies for certain cell processes.

On the other hand the book doesn't go too much into different classes of bacteria and viruses. So at times I wanted to have more information.

While a lot of the chapters are very interesing, they didn't connect at all. Some chapters talk about evolution, some chapters about a brief history of antibiotics, and so on.

Anyway, I'm looking for a better book about learning more about microbes.
