Cengiz Gunes is the author of The Contemporary Kurdish National Movement in Turkey: From Protest to Resistance (London: Routledge, 2012). His main research interests are in identity and nationalism, peace and conflict studies and the international relations of the Middle East.

Game on!

What first attracted me to this book was the geek/gamer aspect of the book. I'm not a gaming geek, although I love old school video games, but I love reading about nerds/geeks because they're so intelligent, funny, and entertaining. This book was a lot of fun to read and I'm really glad I gave it a chance!!

Mia Strong is a strong, independent woman who has been taking care of herself for years now. She's a proud gamer-geek and she's also a popular gaming blogger. So when Mia sets up an auction to sell off her virginity, her story breaks headlines. People don't realize though that she only set up the auction because she needs some way to pay for medical school and to pay for her mother's hospital bills. She's not looking for love and has a plan. One night in exchange for her purity and after that, both of them walk away and never see each other again.

She didn't plan to find someone so like, yet unlike, her. She also didn't plan to fall in love with him.

Adam Drake is rich, powerful, and so happens to be a gaming nerd as well, being a software prodigy and all. He's also holding in a secret that can ruin everything. Despite this, he can't seem to stay away from Mia, the woman whom he won's virginity online. Soon he finds a loophole in Mia's plan and wins her heart.

Problem is, Mia doesn't really know all of Drake's secrets. And when she finds out what he's hiding, it can ruin everything. Are these two gamers meant to be? Or will their love story result in game over?

I loved this book! It was a lot of fun to read, although it started off a bit slow to me, and I really loved the connection between the main characters. I love the twist in the book, even though I guessed what it was from the start, because it added a lot to the story and explained the chemistry we felt between the characters throughout the book.

I highly recommend this book! Can't wait to read book two!

Great book and interesting storyline

4-4.5 stars. A nerdy, gamer girl auctioning off her virginity online to the highest bidder? Consider me intrigued and hooked. Because this story can go so many different ways and more than anything, I needed to get into the mind of Mia to understand her motives behind this. And then I needed to meet Adam, the man who won the auction for the exact same reasons. What's so interesting is how intelligent Mia is, but there are times when her brilliance does seem to escape her in terms of general common sense. While this auction seems very pragmatic on her part, where Mia is offering something of herself for the greater good, she also doesn't see the other side of it because Mia insulates herself heavily from any kind of emotional connection due to past hurts. I could see how much she sheltered her heart. As for Adam, when I finally understood his intent, that really elevated him in my perception of him, not that I didn't like him to start with. Adam is a smart guy, he's had his fair share of hurts, too, and the last thing he wants to see is for Mia to get hurt in an irreversible way, never mind that he could be falling for her in the process. I enjoyed how much the two of them were ignoring the white elephant in the room and danced around the topic until it came time to do a direct confrontation and left them picking up the pieces afterwards, figuring things out singularly and where to go from there. Mia came off childish at times, but I can see how she would revert to that given her upbringing and experiences and the need for control. As for Adam, he made his own blunders, too, but business as taught him not to back down and go after what he wants and he definitely does not like to give up control. I'm curious to see what happens with them next.

A Beautiful Battle To Let Go To Love & Trust

I noticed this book and found its blurb intriguing, so I decided to give it a try. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. The author's writing is spot on, flowing from one scene to the next to the next chapter. Hints and clues to Mia and Adam's backstories were sprinkled perfectly where they needed to be to keep me reading. I couldn't put it down! I read it in one day. Mia and Adam's character descriptions live out between the pages and grow as their story forges ahead. The tension between is strong, seemingly always on the verge of erupting, but then it turns tender, which constantly has them pulling back. Any of the sexual scenes or topics where tastefully done and in respect of both characters. There was nothing vulgar or crass. Those scenes - especially where each of their internal emotional struggles began to surface in front of each other - were actually beautiful and quite moving. Anyone who's ever been emotionally damaged by the lack of love from someone (be it family or whoever) will totally relate to these characters. Mia's emotional battle inside and out is so harsh and wild I wanted to slap some sense into her, but also hug her and let her cry it all out. It's no wonder Adam, even with all his scars, falls in love with her. This book is definitely worth the read!

Get to the bottom of all the confusion...

This is sort of the 'Consumer Reports' approach to sorting out the various products that are available. A comprehensive and scientific method of evaluating hundreds (1500, actually!) of products, all of which claim to be 'the best'. I sell nutritional supplements and was delighted to find that my products are among the very few ranked as the best in this evaluation!!

I have read criticism of this book by some who are concerned that there was a connection between the author, MacWilliams, and the USANA company, which is the one of the very few "Top-Rated" products (MacWilliams himself acknowledges that he is a consultant for several manufacturers). After reviewing the evaluation methodology, and considering that products from 5 other manufacturers, with which MacWilliams has no relationship whatsoever (as far as I can determine) are also "Top-Ranked", I think it is clear that there is no indication whatsoever of any conflict of interest. Some have criticized that one of the researchers who developed the "blended laboratory standard" against which the products were compared is on USANA's Medical Advisory Board (this is clearly stated in his bio in 'The Comparative Guide' so there is no attempt to hide this information). But, every one of the researchers who participated in development of the "blended laboratory standard" are experts in their fields... OF COURSE their advice is sought by many companies in the industry. Those who seek to inpugn this publication are most likely venting 'sour grapes' that their product(s) didn't fare well in the comparison... perhaps their effort would be better directed at improving the quality their products, rather than trying to discredit what appears to be such a fair and balanced evaluation!

As a consumer of Nutritional Supplements, it is a blessing to have a completely independent, un-biased and extensive Science-based" guide that explains step by step, and in a very detailed manner, how 1,500 different brands of supplements were studied, compared and rated.

When you try to purchase any kind of supplement in any given store, as a consumer you have absolutely no idea how good any given brand may be. Very often, one is swayed by the clever marketing campaigns. Sadly, a large majority of these products are vastly inderior to others... the more money is allocated to advertising, the less money is allocated to developing top quality products.

I found The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements Consumer Edition by Lyle MacWilliams to be a helpful guide to understanding the scientific ratings conducted of the products. Since nutritional supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States, it is difficult for the consumer to evaluate and compare the products to determine quality.

Over 1500 US and Canadian supplements were scientifically rated and compared, using 18 critical health supportive criteria to evaluate each product.

Still stands up well today

I hadn't read this book in more than twenty-five years, but I've seen the movie countless times since, so I had to pick up the novel and read it again after all these years. I had forgotten that King's Carrie was NOT Sissy Spacek, and his Margaret White was by no means a Piper Laurie. He took me in for another ride as I read the pages, I was able to put different faces and bodies and the White women. I was able to visualize a different Tommy Ross, Sue Snell, and Chris Hargenson (sp?) (e.g. Chris has dark hair in the book vs. Nancy Allen's blonde locks in the film, etc.).

There's a back-and-forth with the books and studies about telekinesis and the prom-night horror. This was written in the days before the internet and cable TV pundits, who would have beaten the dead horse of an incident like this for all its worth and then some--if it were to happen in 2016. Oh, and cyberbullying! Can you imagine how the kids at school would have made Carrie's life hell on Facebook?

A must-read and the ultimate revenge tale for anyone who's ever been picked last in gym class, given a wedgie, been the butt of a cruel and horrifying group joke, or just tormented period (ugh, no pun intended). It is quite heartbreaking every time when Carrie's world gets better for a couple of hours and then she has the rug yanked from under her once again. You want there to be a way out for her -- just like you want the coyote to kill and eat the damned roadrunner at least once -- but you know it's never going to happen.

All thriller and no filler

This was my first Stephen King book after watching multiple film adaptations of his works. Surprisingly enough, I never saw Carrie, but was familiar with the premise. This book blew me away! So much more detail and the dialogue had me laughing throughout. A great first read. I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down and I kept reading it at work while pretending to do work. " Yes sir I'll get right on those reports [minimizes kindle app on screen]." I loved Stephen King's use of fictional news articles, scholarly articles, and "The White Commission" interviews peppered within the story. It definitely mixed it up and gave nice breaks in the action. Carrie is a great read! Especially for hateful young women and bullies in high school! I've also been reading The Troop by Nick Cutter and I see where he draws a lot of his inspiration from.

The Master of the Macabre's First Novel

The first novel by the master of the macabre himself. We've all heard the story of how Carrie almost never saw the light of day until his wife pulled it out of the trash and told her husband that it was good and that he should finish it. Low and behold, a star is born. Carrie is told through a somewhat different kind of format that has been used with varying degrees of success by other authors. King actually lets us know what happens in the end long before the last few pages through "interviews" and testimonials published from the Carrie White hearing papers. Many times this format of storytelling can be chunky and plodding, slowing the story down. This isn't the case in Carrie.

Carrrie White is the awkward odd ball character that all of us knew back in high school. Although Carrie takes place long before I was in high school, some things never change. No mattter what generation, there is always a hidden rule that many high schoolers follow and that is "Eat or Be Eaten". You either follow what the group you hang out with does or they'll turn on you. This is what happens one day while Carrie White is taking a shower in gym class. Due to her crazy mother's strict religious raising of Carrie, she is caught unaware when her first period starts while in the middle of the shower. Not knowing what is happening to her, she begins to freak out. Thats when the other girls, led by the classic bitch of all bitches, Chris Hargensen, begin teasing and taunting her in a most vicious way. To say this comes back to bite the girls is an understatement. Another girl that was involved, Sue Snell, feels guilty about the way she blindly followed her group in their prank and decides that the way she can make ammends and feel better about herself is to get her wildly popular boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom. When Chris gets suspended over the little incident, she begins plotting her revenge on Carrie. The problem is Carrie isn't like that awkward lump of flesh we all knew in high school. Carrie has an ace up her sleeve that has been held dormant for many years and now that she's entered womanhood, it won't stay dormant any longer.

Carrie has many great things going for it and you can't ask for a much better freshman effort. King's description of the over the top prank in the shower scene will evoke memories of being bullied in high school by virtually all the readers. Religion gone wrong in her mother will also leave an unpleasant taste in your mouth. With so many school shootings in the past handful of years, the ending scene makes you cringe. Even though Carrie doesn't have an AK-47, it still leaves you feeling hollow watching innocent high schoolers bite the dust for being at the wrong place and the wrong time.

King rides many emotions that drag you kicking and screaming back to your high school days and makes you ask yourself "what if?" and thats where Carrie shines. You'll also see a pattern King uses in his later writings where he compares reading someone's mind to taking books off the shelves of a large library and reading them.
