About the Author
Constance Staley is an award-winning Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, where she directed the First-Year Seminar Program for nearly 25 years. Well-known throughout FYE circles, Staley leads faculty development efforts across the country, including a three-year effort with an East Coast Fortune 500 company, where she designed and delivered supervisory training. A Fulbright Fellow who represented the university by teaching in the former Soviet Union, Dr. Staley also developed a multimedia training package for first-year seminar instructors, along with the ground-breaking 50 Ways to Leave Your Lectern resource manual. Other Cengage titles by Dr. Staley include FOCUS on College Success and FOCUS on College Success Concise, along with FOCUS on College and Career Success, which she co-wrote with Steve Staley. Dr. Staley earned a BA in education from Ball State University, and an MA in linguistics and PhD in communication from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Dr. Steve Staley is Professor of English and Humanities at Colorado Technical University, where in 2001 he originated, taught, and directed CTU's College Success course. Dr. Staley graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Colorado. As Assistant Dean of Faculty and Professor of English at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Dr. Staley administered the Academy's successful Rhodes Scholarship program, directed faculty development, developed the First-Year Seminar "Interdisciplinary Education at the Academy" (IDEA) program, and originated a critically acclaimed course in "Physics and Literature." As a Professor of Strategy at the U.S. Naval War College, he also served as a Research Fellow with the United Nations International Peace Academy, authoring The United Nations and Naval Peacekeeping, and co-authoring with Dr. Constance Staley Communicating in Business and The Professions: The Inside Word. As Director of Advising at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Dr. Staley helped develop the school's new First-Year Seminar program. Following a one-year Fulbright Fellowship teaching in Kyrgyzstan, he has served CTU for over 20 years as Dean of Academics, Director of Faculty Development, and Director of General Education.

Plato in a convenient & affordable paperback volume

After years of being dissatisfied with different paperback editions of Plato, I finally stumbled across this Dover Thrift Edition of Plato's four most essential biographical dialogues. Focusing on the life and person of Socrates, this razor-thin paperback volume is the most affordable and accessible introduction to Plato that you will find on the market. Rather than plunging you directly into the Republic and other more abstract writings, it wisely focuses on what we all love about Plato: His dialogues centering on the eccentric life and Christ-like death of his great teacher Socrates. This English translation is the old standard one, of course, but it's a wonderfully slender little volume that gives you enough Plato without overwhelming you. For those of us who like our Plato in small doses, rather than in a fat trade paperback (i.e. Signet Classics) or big expensive tome of collected writings, this volume is wonderful. In our electronic world, there's little need to have all the writings of Plato in one hardcopy edition anyway, as one will easily find several free and inexpensive translations of his entire corpus in electronic formats online.

A great way to introduce philosophy.

Most philosophy books just present a stream of assertions and arguments that may of may not be organized into chapters. If you don't like reading what amount to court briefs, those books can be a pain to read.

This book is nothing like that.

The Dialogues are framed as Socrates's life story, complete with side characters, one-line-jokes, and dramatic tension. These things majorly elevate what would have been a dull slog through ancient Greek debates. You end up rooting for Socrates rather than just analyzing him. The final dialogue, in which he openly drops arguing in favor of simply stating his religious beliefs, is a little off, but the rest of the book is great. Easily the best I could expect out of a philosophy book.
