David is also a writer and trainer, and teaches in the Portland State University multimedia program. He wrote the bestselling Missing Manual titles on Adobe Dreamweaver, CSS, and JavaScript.

Solid book with all the content you need

A Missing Manual aims to be "the book that should have been in the box." Well, if Adobe had included this work by McFarland, that box would have been big and heavy indeed! This thing is over 1000 pages and includes just about everything a serious beginner would need to advance quickly with both the Dreamweaver tool and with modern Web page construction. The author explains early on that he even deliberately left out certain features of Dreamweaver that have suffered from lack of attention by Adobe and no longer conform to modern page and site construction practices. "It's not in your interest to learn how to use [these features] nor in our interest to lead you toward a tool that's no good."

I like that attitude and it is a clue that these 1000 pages contain solid material with no waste in time for you.

The book is logically organized, like a class that teaches Web site construction with the best tool around. You advance chapter by chapter across the basics, learning both the tool interface and the coding practices. I recommend you follow along in the book -- but, just in case, this book has a companion Web site with most of the example pages ready to use.

The other thing I like about the book is, once past the mechanics, the book goes into the more interesting issues, like the Spry drop-ins, design issues, layout flexibility, site management and the ever-challenging cascading style sheets. On the other hand, so far I have not encountered any handling of the cooler features of HTML 5 or CSS 3 -- but that is not the purpose of this book.

This book should be all you need to get comfortable with both Dreamweaver and the range of coding conveniences it offers.

It's like a course

If you don't know where to begin when you open Dreamweaver the first time, i recommend you this book. Dreamweaver doesn't come with a manual anymore, so this book helps. A nice thing about this book is that it doesn't cover some features that are not in use anymore but Dreamweaver still has. So it's focus in on active and useful features.

Practical Guide to Building a Website from Scratch

Building a website is a daunting task, but this book takes you from the basics up to the powerful advanced features of Dreamweaver CS6. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the intricacies of web-building to create their own website from scratch. I was a complete novice but now I have enough working knowledge to finish my first website. This book is thorough and written in a very comprehensible manner. There's a tutorial where you build a website for a fictitious Caf� and learn how to use Dreamweaver's built-in tools. At first sight, it's a little overwhelming (nearly 1,000 pages of hefty reading) but it's easy to digest if you're motivated to build a website from scratch. I had one issue with this manual. Since I was a true "beginner" in web design, I did not know any of the codes used by webmasters and I couldn't find a "listing" of the codes in the Index. The codes are, however, scattered throughout the book. Also, since I was not familiar with "web-related" terminology, I had trouble finding answers to certain problems encountered on my website. Overall, I believe this truly is the Manual that should have been included in Adobe's Dreamweaver CS6.

Just Follow the REAL William Banting Diet (for Free)

The REAL Banting Diet (named after William Banging a very successful user of the diet back in the mid 1800s and wrote the booklet "Letters on Corpulence" on his experiences; he was placed on this diet by his most recent physician, Dr. William Harvey who obtained information on this subject from attending lectures in Paris by Claude Bernard. Although this booklet was first printed in 1863, it has remained continuously in print as of 2008 - and free copies, usually via pdf files can be found online).

A reading on Letters of Corpulence reveals that in fact Mr. Banging was instructed to eat FATTY meats, and NOT lean cuts. Also, fruit was extremely minimized - had Dr. Harvey known of the extent that fruit contains fructose - the worst of the sugars - I have no doubt that even that minimal fruit would have been eliminated as his goal was to reduce the consumption of all starches and saccharines (their word then to encompass all sugars). His allowance of very small amount (1 ounce) of "dry toast" is also debatable - but in any case less than the Carbs in the fruit. If you note in the story of Mr. Banting, until he became too obese to do so (before the diet), he was a heavy exerciser (sculling in the River Thames) to no avail.

In any case, a number of these recipes (no matter how delicious looking) would NOT have passed muster with Dr. Harvey (especially if he had today's knowledge on starches and ALL sugar forms) nor that of Mr. Banging who ate simply and did not pursue complicated meal planning and recipes.

Truthfully, I am not sure that the author even knew this information about Mr. Banting as she never mentions him or his situation in her book! I believe that she heard somewhere about the term Banting and it having SOMETHING to do with low carb dieting, so voila, let's write another little Kindle book - if you check her history, she has written on all kinds of cookery... dump dinners (that aren't low carb), vegan cookbooks (that aren't low carb), Ketogenic cookbooks (that are neither keto or low carb), etcetera, etcetera. I simply don't trust such authors.

I read my daughter's copy (as she is getting big time into LCHF along with her mother and I). I advised her how she could adjust a number of the recipes to make them Banting / LCHF and others just to disregard (or delete the book).

Marcel Danesi is Director of the Program in Semiotics and Communication Theory and Professor of Linguistic Anthropology at the University of Toronto, Canada. I found this book to be very helpful for taking notes but was not good in terms of practice questions. It has a wide variety of colorful illustrations and tables that went along with the readings that helped out a lot, especially if you are a visual learner and helped organize the information in a different way. This book was well organized according to topics and it was easy to find content unlike some books that make you search through the entire book. This book was very easy to read and understand and summed up the material nicely instead of dragging it out. This book also had case studies that went along with each chapter so as you were reading over the material you could also follow along with the case study. This was nice because it provides examples written out how it actually would be in real life and helps you to relate a diagnosis with certain symptoms. Another thing that I really about this book was that it gave examples on good communication versus bad communication. It gave an example situation and then there was an example of a less effective communication conversation and a more effective conversation. This is very helpful because nurses need to always be therapeutic but also need answers from the patient and sometimes you have to get straight to the point. This gives you a good idea of how to effectively communicate with patients and how to go about that. The boxes for nursing care plans for respecting cultural diversity were very nice because as a nurse in the United States we have to be sensitive of other cultures and their common practices and throughout the book. This book gives great examples of specific groups and what their practices are, it is good to be aware of these so you can be sensitive while providing care to your patient. What was disliked about this book was as you are reading it has only a few practice questions per chapter, which I thought could have been more challenging and more N-Clex style. They were not good for practicing for the N-Clex or nursing exams and the right answers were too obvious. Also, the question’s answers did not have very good rationales describing why it was the correct answer. Overall, I would say that this was worth purchasing because of the easy to read and understand, detailed content, and the quantity of information it provides you with.

Much better

Excelsior just updated their textbooks and started using this one in place of the Maternity/Peds book they had before. I was SO happy about this. This book is way better, and I haven't found any grammar or spelling errors yet. (The last book was so full of them that I refused to read it until they updated.) It also has better visual aids inside, and it can be used with The Point, which is one of my favorite things about it.

Long winded author who forgets what she said in the Last Chapter

The book keeps repeating the same information over and over and... You get my point. Some of it is contradictory for example in chapter 12 it lists Colace as a pregnancy Class C drug but in Chapter 13 it says Colace is safe to take with no teratogenic effects throught pregnancy. I thought maybe it was me so I actually looked up both pages and read one with the other and it absolutely cotridicts itself. I believe the authors wrote more words to make themselves appear more scholarly. If they would have put down their pens for a minute the book would be half as thick. If you don't absolutely need it for class, don't buy it!!!!!!
