This book is a great piece for anyone wanting to understand the basics of sound explained from scratch. Originally published in 1959, revised in 1969, the version I have is from 1978. Acoustics-the science of sound--hasn't changed; but the technology and medium we use has.
This book is a valuable supplement for audio pros. There are sections that show how to build a sound stage like the big boys, for example. A microphone section showing [now vintage] mics dissected. A lot of techncal stuff that modern audio books may water down so that it is easier for the novice to comprehend. This book is the real thing, and I'm sure the seasoned audio pros went to this book for information.
State of the art at the time it was written, this important history is still applicable today.

Required Reading, before spending on gear or studio

How many times have I seen people stumble into wanting a recording studio to "save money on recording" or that "It would be cool..."? I want to save them most of their life and more money than they have by recommending that they read a good textbook like this. Yes, it's expensive. $40 in 1974 was expensive, too. That would be over 100 gallons of "SuperChief" Leaded Premium fuel for the 70 Camaro LT-1, back in the day. A gallon of 102 Octane "racing fuel" at my local Tessoro station was over $4 a gallon on last look, so on that basis, The Audio Cyclopedia is a modern bargain, even at current levels.

Why the Second Edition? Transistors and analog tape recorders made some serious advances between 1959 and 1969, but only incremental advances since. If you want to know a lot about post-WWII film sound recording, hold out for the First Edition. Film sound is covered in the Second Ed, just not with such emphasis. The current trend in returning to transformer coupled circuits is well covered in the 2nd Ed.

Acoustics is well covered, but later books on acoustics add much to the material in the Second Edition. Modern test equipment makes measuring a room less of a chore. If you can measure it, you can change it or fix it!

If a person is interested in modern recording and reproduction technology, this is the book that is the foundation of most later books. There are others, like Langford-Smith "Radiotron Designer's Handbook" 4th Ed that are equally important in a more narrow interest , but not a single volume that covers so much in such useful technical detail as Audio Cyclopedia.

I own a copy of this edition and would not want to get rid of it since it covers some older technology that I find interesting (I even own and still use some of that old stuff). That said this is not the current version of the book.

The book has been renamed "Handbook for Sound Engineers, Fourth Edition" and is now in its 4th Edition. Glen Ballou is now the editor, and I wrote two chapters in the last two editions.

Amazon stocks the current edition which makes it easy to find and buy :>)

About the Author

Robert Reid, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His research focuses on children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and on strategy instruction. Dr. Reid has published more than 100 articles and book chapters and has presented at national and international conferences. Additionally, he codeveloped the ADHD-IV Rating Scale. He serves on the editorial boards of five journals and actively reviews for several others.

Torri Ortiz Lienemann, PhD, is District Learning Coordinator and Assistant Special Education Director at Norris School District 160, Firth, Nebraska. Her work focuses on providing teachers with the necessary tools, specifically data-driven instructional interventions, to meet the needs of all students. Currently, Dr. Lienemann is involved in researching vocabulary and reading comprehension in at-risk students; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; grant writing; and creating new programs to assist students with special needs and their teachers. She has been a classroom resource teacher at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Jessica L. Hagaman, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She specializes in the education of students with learning disabilities and at-risk students. Dr. Hagaman has classroom experience at the early childhood and elementary school levels. Her research interests include early intervention for at-risk students, strategy instruction, and academic interventions.

I didn't like the vagueness of the SRSD model and thought that although it said strategies are left unspecified, they should offer something to guide the student trying to learn the model. It's like trying to learn anatomy without telling you exactly bones are and where they go. It just doesn't work.

Biology has progressed tremendously in the last decade due in part to the increased automation in the generation of data from sequences to genotypes to phenotypes. Biology is now very much an information science and bioinformatics provides the means to connect biological data to hypotheses. Bioinformatics: Tools and Applications provides up-to-date descriptions of the various areas of applied bioinformatics, from the analysis of sequence, literature, and functional data to the function and evolution of organisms. The ability to process and interpret large volumes of data is essential with the application of new high throughput DNA sequencers providing an overload of sequence data. Initial chapters provide an introduction to the analysis of DNA and protein sequences, from motif detection to gene prediction and annotation, with specific chapters on DNA and protein databases as well as data visualization. Additional chapters focus on gene expression analysis from the perspective of traditional microarrays and more recent sequence based approaches, followed by an introduction to the evolving field of phenomics, with specific chapters detailing advances in plant and microbial phenome analysis and a chapter dealing with the important issue of standards for functional genomics. Further chapters present the area of literature databases and associated mining tools which are becoming increasingly essential to interpret the vast volume of published biological information, while the final chapters present bioinformatics purely from a developers point of view, describing the various data and databases as well as common programming languages used for bioinformatics applications. David’s areas of interest include applied agricultural biotechnology; the structure and expression of plant genomes; the discovery and application of molecular genetic markers; and applied bioinformatics, with a focus on wheat, barley and Brassica crops.

After a tough day of counseling sessions, Anglican priest Mark Webber is looking forward to a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant. When he sees who’s bellied up to the bar, though, he reaches for his cell phone to call the police.

Thrown together, Mark and Lucas find common ground in the struggle to help a young gay man come to terms with his sexuality—and the fight against homophobic townsfolk. As attraction grows, the past is the last stumbling block between them and a future filled with hope.

An amazing tale. I don't really need to say more, other than 'read this

This is an amazingly well-written tale of love and humanity, of the good and the bad that can be found in people, of trying to do the right thing even when it would be so much easier and so much more fun to just go with the flow and do what feels good, of sacrifice, of standing up for what's right, what you believe in, what's worthy and what you want but feel you have to earn. It's a tale full of emotions, but never OTT, just a tale that leaves you with a warm feeling inside, and a sense of, 'aaaah'. It's a 5* Keeper of a tale.

If you've read Breathe by Sloan Parker, and loved it, but wished that it could have been simply a tale of leads who should not be able to be happy together, finding lasting love together, without all the annoying distractions of family and intrigue, then you'll love this tale, as it focuses mainly on Lucas, who's just out of prison for killing a man when he was 18/19, and who's still on parole for three years, and on Mark, who's a local priest whose brother Lucas killed, but who tries to do the right thing, the Christian thing, but who proves he's not above sinning and wanting revenge.

The circumstances that brought the leads together were believable and ordinary; it was refreshing that there was nothing fabricated/obvious about it, and it was clear that each struggled with their own form of guilt, but never at any point did the author make me feel as if Lucas was just a killer; he was a guy who'd been young and stupid who'd gotten drunk and into a fight, killing someone by mistake, but who'd paid the price, who'd come to terms with his demons, who'd repented, who felt himself unworthy of happiness or anything beyond a basic existence, and who was trying to do the right thing, and trying stay on the straight and narrow. I liked him from the start, and his sense of right and wrong was strong, made him a target, at times made him a bit of a victim, but he remained steadfast. He seemed incredibly mature and with a strong sense of morality, and yet at the same time, strangely naive (though I don't mean this in a derogatory way) and...innocent and almost childlike.

Mark, man of the cloth, tried to do the right thing and help his fellow man, as well as helping a gay teen, but he proved that he was simply human, and perhaps in his eagerness to do what he felt he had to, what decency should make him do, proved that he was just human and not without sin himself. That his faith was tested, and then turned against him, was both sad but cathartic, and at then end, proved to be the catalyst that would be the making of him.

I liked that the tale wasn't heavy on recriminations, but that at the same time, it wasn't all puppies, sunshine and roses, and that there were tough decisions that had to be made, that both made sacrifices, but that ultimately, there was good in both Mark and Lucas, which triumphed. If you're looking for a hot and heavy tale like Breathe, you won't be getting that in this book, at the leads don't get together until 62% of the tale has passed, but that was entirely appropriate for the leads, who had to learn to forgive, accept forgiveness, redeem themselves and learn to believe, and for the way in which the tale was written.

The ending was perfect - low key, like the leads, but with the kind of relationship that Mark had wanted, but thought he wouldn't be able to openly have, and that Lucas didn't feel was his right to have. It wasn't preachy, it wasn't heavy, but it was uplifting and positive. I loved the tale, it's as simple as that.

Lucas Cain is 22 and has been in prison for 3 years after killing a man in a bar fight. He has just got early parole, and is now a free man once more. But he has changed. Understandably so. He kept his head down in prison doing what he needed to do to survive and he is determined to not go back. As his crime was drink related that is one of the terms of his parole. No alcohol. Others are a 9pm curfew, a place to live, and a job. So, to his old friends, he is now dead boring. And oh my God this broke my heart. He is so desperate to tow the line, follow the rules, stay free - and yet everything works against him. :-(

Anglican Rev. Mark Webber lost his brother Jimmy 3 years ago, a victim of a violent crime. Killed in a bar fight. By Lucas Cain. He and his family are devastated to hear of Luke's early release and when Mark sees Luke in town, in the pub, supposedly drinking and right back in the swing of it with his motley crew of friends, well, Mark loses it. He calls the police to dob Luke in. This starts a spiral of decline for Mark. The good guy is no longer so good. I thought Kate portrayed his struggle so well. He does so much in the community - including running the halfway house for ex-cons, but of course when it becomes personal it puts a whole different slant on things. Mark also has a lot of other stuff going on - he is openly gay and everything is fine with his bosses in the church. Or so it seems. Everything is unravelling for him :-(

This book could have been depressing. It wasn't. The issues it dealt with had my mind racing! The hypocrisy of the church. The small mindedness of the community who are happy enough to embrace a gay minister so long as, you know, he doesn't flaunt it by actually having a boyfriend. The audacity of it!! :-P It also focuses on forgiveness - by others you may have hurt, but as importantly by yourself. And of course we have rehabilitation. I could argue this til the cows come home. I believe so strongly in the absolute necessity of helping rehabilitate ex-prisoners so they can become contributing members once more, or maybe for the first time. *puts soap box away*

There are also some really sweet moments - pushy squirrels, stray hoses requiring the removal of wet t-shirts, and a cantankerous old lady whose bark is worse than her bite. Alex and Elise were wonderful side characters. And damn but I felt bad for Sean too - I always want redemption and he deserves a shot...... you will need to read the book to meet these characters, and see just how engaging they all are. :-) This book is highly recommended. Go. Buy the book!

This is not your usual MM romance. There is no fluff. There is not a lot of hot steamy sex. There are no easy answers or quick fixes. There is however a fantastic story about how one tragic, stupid moment in time can change your life forever.

This book deals with real life situations that will be make you uncomfortable, challenge what you think and believe and make you ask questions of yourself.

If you killed someone, accidentally or not, and were paroled after serving a short time in prison would you believe you deserved to be free?

If you were the brother of someone killed, accidentally or not, and their murderer was released on parole early how would you react?

Lucas and his friends are what I guess you could call a small town gang. They are rebels, don’t always agree with the law and cause a lot of trouble. They are still only teenagers when Lucas gets into a bar fight one night. In a split second, with a bottle as a weapon, a man is left dead. No amount of remorse, praying or rehabilitation will ever change the circumstances but does the young man that swung the bottle deserve to carry on with his life? Should he be forever banished from a civilised society? Can anyone who kills another human being be successfully rehabilitated?

In the three years that Lucas spends in jail he fundamentally changes. He is put through counselling, training and learns to follow rules and set boundaries. He is given early parole, with a lot of restrictions, giving him an element of his freedom back. Does he deserve that freedom when a man is still dead?

Marks brother was killed in the bar that fateful night. Mark is an Anglican Priest and counsels his parishioners on love and forgiveness. He cannot however, initially, find forgiveness for his brothers murderer who is now walking the same streets as he is. Mark has never had his faith challenged as deeply but he is innately good and recognises when his actions have been inappropriate and caused problems.

Lucas may have changed in the last three years but sadly his friends haven’t. His life is no longer compatible and he soon has to leave his past behind in order to survive. He ends up in a half way house where Mark is in charge. Mark tries very hard to hate Lucas but circumstances show that maybe his strongly held opinions of the man may be incorrect. Lucas is subdued and full of regret, almost submissive in the way he wants to follow orders and routine and not at all what Mark expects.

This book deals a lot with forgiveness. Even at the end I am not sure Lucas has really forgiven himself. Could Mark ever really forgive a man for taking the life of his brother no matter how strong his belief in God and forgiveness? The one think I would have liked to see was some sort of discussion between the two men about what happened that night three years ago. Would that have helped either of them with closure?

It is quite a heavy and challenging read but very much worth it. IMO it is a book that will make you question your beliefs and feelings, it will make you think, which is never a bad thing for a book to do. What of Sean? Will we ever learn of his fate?

While it is not as detailed as the cGMP courses I have learned in Post Graduate Professional courses it is a great starting prim

I have to disagree with the other review. While it is not as detailed as the cGMP courses I have taken in Post Graduate Professional courses it is a great starting primer for the small crafter who wants to sell product and do it correctly. These Crafters are the exact market for whom the book was written. They have little to no previous exposure to cGMP and this is a great all around starting resource. It has everything included which will allow this person to make goo, safe products as well as to limit their liability. I work with small start-up lines. If they insist on producing their own product I will recommend the book. In some cases I have actually purchased a copy and sent it to them as part of my services.

A must for the home soaper who is considering opening shop.

This is a wonderful book, I highly recommend it for anyone who is considering selling their bath creations. I wasn't sure about buying this book because the author is American but she explains the requirements for Canada and other countries too. I still have a long way to go but armed with this book I feel much better prepared to start my own soap business.

Dr. Daniel G. Strawn is a Professor of Soil Chemistry in the Plant, Soil, and Entomological Sciences Department at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Dr. Hinrich L. Bohn is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Salih J. Altoma�is Professor Emeritus of Arabic and Comparative Literature at Indiana University. He has served as director of Middle Eastern Studies and chair of the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Department. His many publications include�The Yearbook of Comparative and General Literature�(ed.) and�On Arabic-Western Literary Relations.�

This book, by a professor from my undergraduate school of Indiana University, is a book of lists, annotations and brief essays on a topic little known beyond academic and specialised circles - modern Arabic literature in English translation. There are chapters devoted to fiction, drama, and poetry (with an appendix dealing with autobiographies and memoirs.

Altoma begins with a brief introduction showing the state of the discipline, beginning with quotes from others that highlight the difficulties; for example, 'Arab literature is still largely the preserve of Middle Eastern specialists. It has not come out of the ghetto.' (Peter Clark) However, Altoma states that such feelings are more anecdotal than factual in basis. Still, there is a feeling (particularly among Arabs themselves) that Arabic literature is largely 'ignored, distorted or marginalised in the West.' Since 1947, however, a great deal has been done, and even more so since 1988 when Mahfuz won the Nobel Prize for literature.

Altoma devotes the first chapter to Najib Mahfuz, who is the father of the novel in Arabic (he is likened to the landmark of the pyramids, such is his stature in Arabic literature). Mahfuz, a native of Egypt, combined Western education and literary techniques with Arabic traditions and synthesised a new art form. 'Being a religious and literary medium for more than fourteen centuries, Arabic admittedly does tax its own speakers with a legacy of problems,' according to Altoma. This is to say nothing of non-native speakers. However, while some were predicting the demise of Arabic as a primary langauge for many nations (including Egypt), others have pointed to figures such as Mahfuz as showing a means of survival.

Altoma presents bibliographic information for fiction in several ways - the primary list is chronological, cross-referenced by author, women authors, translators, titles, publishers, and country of origin. The poetry bibliographies include lists of anthologies as well as lists of Arabic poetry in international anthologies (this one intentionally a partial list). The lists of dramas and autobiographies/memoirs are much shorter, given the nature of these types of literature.

This is not a book one simply sits and reads. It is meant to be a companion, a study and research tool, and serves this function well. While any such book is quickly out of date in terms of keeping current, it still provides a very handy snapshot of the last half of the twentieth century in terms of Arabic literature of many kinds available in English translation.

Well Written, Lacks Proof of Facts. Extremely Speculative

I am not a member of the NYPD but I do live in NYC and am interested in cultural issues. I picked up this book and found it to be a good read, well written, (however, numerous grammatical and editing errors abound) but also a highly speculative book.

The author has encountered a SERIOUS credibility issue after this book was written in large part because he writes extensively about his close relationship with disgraced New York politician and former NYPD cop Hiram Monserrate. Monserrate, potrayed as a good guy by the author, has been convicted of assault, and its obvious to anyone who followed the story that he was also someone who entered into a huge coverup regarding the crime so he would not be convicted of a felony, vs the misdemeanor. Hiram is a disastrous and disgraced status in state politics, and it really burns Castro's credibility to see how he puts him on a throne. Monsserate was thrown out of the NYPD with a psychological disability - yet Castro would be quick to point out that he was discriminated because he was latino. Hmmmm. You should also know that Castro was on Hirams defense during the girlfriend bashing case, working as a investigator to prove him innocent. That smells dirty.

The author does not provide a index with any documentation of many of the cases or incidents he claims happened. Many of these were public events, and so there could and should have been a index of sources.

Secondly, the author, while he probably does have the right to feel he was discriminated against by being Latino, takes his personal vendetta a little to far. He constantly adds the word "spic" without proof, suggesting people were thinking this or saying this in situations, when it just cant be proved. It seems the author is paranoid that everyone is racist or constantly viewing his as a "spic." The author, in so many words, clearly shows his lack of self esteem about his own race over and over again in this book. By the end of the book, you start to think Castro is the racist, because he really uses the term "white" in trashy tones, and is just so clearly paranoid about race.

Castro was a loud mouth, unreliable and unpredictable cop, albeit a self proclaimed good one, there should be no wonder he was under the microscope. Any big organization or Company would have done the same to a loud and troublesome employee to cover themselves, be them any race. The sense is after reading this book, Castro felt he had to be loud and noisy about everything just because he WAS latino.

No doubt the NYPD is a organization with troubles, like ANY organization. But Castro's lack of evidence, lack of documentation and his speculative and "suggestive" tone is not good police work. One would expect a policeman to know better. Might this be what landed him out of the NYPD?

As a retired detective with over twenty years in one of the most prestigious units in the NYPD I can say that I conducted hundreds of investigations. Proudly, my investigative training and expertise always resulted in me catching the bad guy. Criminals are caught many times because they leave behind signatures. These signatures can range from phrases, to marks on a wall or particular method of handwriting just to name a few. Interestingly enough when I read the review by Greg NYC, his words jumped off the page and hit me in the face. The old familiar abusive language and condescending statements reminded me of an old friend of mine from the NYPD. The review by Greg NYC who sounds eerily like J. Brandt, the gadfly of his unit is nothing more than a diatribe. Brandt who is a close friend of the author chose to write about the author's relationship with disgraced NYS Senator Hiram Monserrate and that the author used bad judgment for speaking highly about Monserrate, twelve years before Monserrate was convicted of misdemeanor assault. How is that a review? Furthermore, the author doesn't write extensively about his relationship with Monserrate, however, J.Brandt writes about their friendship because he knows how close they were as he too is close with both of them. For whatever reason in his sick mind J. Brandt decided to write such a ridicules and idiotic review about NYPD Blue Lies only he knows. J. Brandt claims that this book is highly speculative. That is a crock of manure, every single act of misconduct written about in NYPD Blue Lies that was committed by corrupt police officers can be verified by going to Charles Castro's website. In fact many of the incidents that J. Brandt claims were "speculative" were highly publicized cases. Castro's biggest point is that even as heinous and highly publicized as these cases were, many cops were given menial punishments. J.Brandt even goes on to call his close friend a racist. Maybe J. Brandt has Alzheimer's or dementia did you forget the fact that Castro helped to organize a $27 million dollar lawsuit against the NYPD for racial discrimination and won. NYPD Blue Lies is a book that I read in four days, it captivated me from beginning to end. I don't know Charlie Castro well but I do know that he is a funny individual and some of the stories in this book had me peeing in my pants. Overall the book is very well written yet it can be offensive to some readers who may differ with Charlie Castro's point of view.

Honestly written ! Written with honest candor and I respect Charles Castro for bringing to light so many things that John Q. Public would not otherwise be aware of. And ignorance is not always bliss.
