Master of Emotion: A Journeyman Piece

YA speculative fiction isn't usually my thing (I usually go for meatier fare), but I've been devouring a lot of different books lately and the premise of this plot seemed intriguing. I confess, once I got to the action sequences, I couldn't put it down until the climax resolved. Unfortunately, that was 4:30am.

Ms. Huff does a pretty good job of capturing the emotional walls built up by an isolated teenager, as well as his starvation for human contact and blossoming of character when he finally connects with someone he trusts. I also liked the camaraderie between Beau and his twin brother, Bryce, his lifeline to humanity until Rose helps him break out of his shell.

The premise is familiar, although the treatment is well-done. I liked this book and look forward to reading the sequel, Supreme Chancellor of Stupidity.

Iran is indeed a complex country

Iran is the only majority Muslim country today that still has a conscious connection to its pre-Islamic past. This book is not only about Islam. It also explores what you may call "Iranian Consciousness" rooted in the region's historical experiences with multiple religions and intellectual trends. In the beginning of the book Ali Hashemi' resistance to overtly celebrate the fall of the monarchy brings into mind Khatami's emotionless stare at the Azadi stadium that was captured on television cameras after the Iranian national team scored a goal. It gives you a clue to the mindset of the clerical class in Iran. One also has to add to this the question that was posed to Khomeini as his plane was about to land in Iran: What is your feeling about coming back to Iran? Khomeini replied "NOTHING." Towards the end of the book there is a mention of Imam Hussain and Rustam. Only a few Iranians will take one over the other as a superior hero.

Great read!

The book is wonderful in that it goes past simple history and tries to give you the upmost context possible. You live the life of a young boy and see how he and his nation progressed through time. It's like a history book with flavor by not focusing on a step by step narration of what resulted in Iranian history. Many subjects converge and diverge such as art, Islam, logic and politics, etc. To me, that accurately describes the multi-cultural characteristics of Iran and its revolution.

This work relates much of the religious background to the 1978 Iranian Revolution with it's focus on Shia learning. It's structure is tricky with forays onto the past peppering a first person retelling.

Excellent Overview for the Russian Studies Student

I bought this at a local bookstore as a supplement to my Russian studies. I was definitely not disappointed.

The multi-authored text is well-written and respectably written. The complexities of Russian culture are made interesting and easy to understand by the authors. Dr. Bova compiles some truly excellent writing that even a high schooler can understand. It's not highly-technical writing. It gets to the point and analyzes art, literature, politics, religion, and history without getting into high scholarly language. "Keep it simple" works with this book.

I highly recommend as a supplement. I would even recommend as a textbook for a 100-level cultures class. It helped me greatly for at least four Russian studies classes. One downfall is that the Index is not really thorough. I'm sure that those with PhDs will probably find problems in the book - I do not have a PhD in Russian studies (at least, not yet).

This book contains short and concise exercises for use in a warm-up before practice or performance, and for general technical advancement. The book is divided into four sections: I Arpeggios, II Scales, III Tremolo, and IV Slurs. Each section contains a description of the exercises and general instructions on how to play them. The exercises are intended for guitarists who are looking for a simple warm-up that does not require learning many complicated etudes, exercises or routines. In this book, only one etude is used for a variety of arpeggio and tremolo patterns. The scale warm-ups are based on a two-octave, one-position scale that is shifted up and down the fretboard, and a simple one-position chromatic scale. The pull-off and hammer-on slurs are combined into one exercise to save time. This same routine, when practiced with the metronome gradually increasing the tempo, can also double for technical work. With the exception of one chromatic scale exercise, the rest are on closed strings. Besides being able to move the scale up and down the fretboard, the first finger can be barred. This will increase the left hand difficulty and improve the left hand position and strength.There is close to an hour's worth of material if all the exercises are played with all of their variations at different tempos. Not everything needs to be played everyday, so the warm-up session can be as long as desired or as short as time allows.

A great little book for a guitar student to use for warn up.I like the idea of taking a simple ex. and embellishing it to devepo ones technique.Karl sheit did this using an etude for different techinques.Idid not realize what I had until I went to her web site.Gohar explains more about speed burst and arpeggios no 5. 0n her web videos lessonettes.Check this out then go back to book.Ihave learned so much form her lessonettes.I thank her so much for her endeavour

Exercises for the Advanced Guitarist

I used to practice violin scales to develop fingering patterns and sight reading for playing classical guitar. Gohar Vardanyan is trying to fill the void of having no books for dedicated skill development with her warm-ups. However, her exercises are extremely difficult and meant for the advanced guitarist. A progressive approach from easy to more advanced exercises arranged by musical keys would make a book that prepares students for fingering patterns and develops sight reading far more useful and appealing to a wider audience of guitar students.

About the Author

Christopher Kitcher has been working in the electrical industry for over 50 years. As well as having been both a contractor and a builder, for many years Chris was a Lecturer in Electrical Installation at Central Sussex College and is still an NICEIC inspector for the Microgeneration Certification scheme (MCS). For the last 17 years he has worked in the college environment while maintaining his electrical skills by periodically working on site.
