The first printmakers were cave people who painted their hands and slapped them against cave walls. Today, printmakers like Ayres still use methods nearly as simple. Others, like printmaker and painter Welden, have created completely new processes, like his solarplate method. Monotypes, the subject of Ayres's book, are created by applying oil- or water-based paint to a flat plate. By pressing a dampened sheet of paper to the plate, a single print is made. The earliest such prints go back to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, around 1640. Later, Degas and Gauguin experimented with the method. Today, there is a virtual explosion of new ways to create monotypes. Ayres explores the work of a variety of such artists, who demonstrate imaging techniques, masks, stencils, collage, and mixed-media prints. The results vary from traditional images to eccentric, colorful fantasies. In 1972, Welden discovered that polymer printers' plates could be used in printmaking by exposing them to the sun. Draw on a transparency, place it over the plate, expose it to the sun, and the plate is, in effect, etched for printing. The method is now widely used, and Welden and Muir have produced the first book on this extremely versatile art. Both books are highly recommended.

Great Resource and Guide

This book is a valuable resource of methods used in making monotypes. Ms. Ayres reviews every aspect of making a monotype from the tools, the ink or paint, and the process of transferring the image. All the printmaking terms used when describing this art are expertly explained and illustrated. It is clearly not a medium restricted to artists familiar with printmaking. The work of many artists are presented along with the ingenuity they have used to transfer their work. A very valuable resource book both for the artist and those wishing to learn more about this art form.

Great book for monoprinting

I agree with the previous reviews - if you're creating monoprints, and particularly if you're looking for non-toxic methods, this is a great book. It's full color with many inspiring illustrations, and full of useful, practical information written in a friendly, down-to-earth manner.

Re. recommended paints: I recently had the pleasure of taking a monoprinting class with Julia Ayres and her daughter Gail Ayres (at the Art Methods & Materials Show in Pasadena, CA, Oct 2004). The Ayres now recommend using the new Akua-Kolor waterbased inks by Rostow & Jung ([...]) which I assume were not invented at the time this book was originally printed. The advantage is that these inks are non-toxic, clean up easily, and they stay moist for days. You then print to DRY printmaking paper, and the inks dry instantly once they hit the paper. Now you don't have to worry about the inks drying on the plate, or handling fragile, wet paper. (I shoved my Createx paints in a bottom drawer after the workshop!)

(If you get the opportunity, take a class with the Ayres if you're just getting started, as there's nothing quite like seeing the process in action and the book will make even more sense! They also teach using the PinPress Roller for making monoprints by hand; very useful if you don't have access to an expensive printing press.)

Monotype

This book gives a thorough overview of Monotype printing. It starts out with materials needed, then goes on to talk about hand transfers, press transfers and doing monotypes in acrylic, watercolor, oil and printmaking inks. It covers mixed media and stencils, masks, etc. It has much practical/useful information in each section on both techniques and materials. There are examples of each type of work covered, athough I would have liked to see a larger "gallery" of work by different artist. A very good book if you are interested in monotypes.

About the Author
Immersed in country music since his birth, BILL C. MALONE has been both a scholar and a performer of the music for several decades. On the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Country Music, U.S.A. in 2008, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for American Music. His other books include Don’t Get Above Your Raisin’: Country Music and the Southern Working Class, Singing Cowboys and Musical Mountaineers: Southern Culture and the Roots of Country Music, and Southern Music: American Music.

JOCELYN R. NEAL is Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the author of The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Legacy in Country Music.

Extensive Treatise on Country Tunes

An encyclopedic, rich, and interesting history of country music, this tome is essential for anyone interested not solely in country but also in American popular music. Each chapter serves as a through treatment of a particular genre or period of country music, and the work as a whole reveals a compelling history of American folk and popular culture. There are fascinating stories in this work, but don't expect to blaze through this volume in a day or two. If you're interested in a more compact and oftentimes more focused history, I'd recommend another of Malone's major works: Southern Music/American Music.

The definitive country music history book

In 1968, Bill C. Malone wrote the first edition of the very first country music history book ever, Country Music USA. It offers a scholarly approach to the history of country music from its origins and as of 2010, it was updated to the present with help by Jocelyn R. Neal as Bill C. Malone is not a fan of the current mainstream country scene in Nashville generally speaking although he is a fan of Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Patty Loveless and such. There are chapters devoted to Bluegrass, old time country, the folk music world, modern country, early commercial Hillbilly music, a chapter on Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family, Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, and more, all thoroughly researched. It is also has a very thorough history of the music industry over the years, past and present and the writing style is perfect for the kind of book it is. As a whole, this book is highly recommended for anybody interested in the history of country music and popular music in general.

This is the place to start any indepth consideration of country and western music. In fact Dr. Malone's survey and Nick Tosche's COUNTRY THE BIGGEST MUSIC IN AMERICA are my two favorite introductory volumes. Each book is radically different from one another with Dr. Malone's history by far the more authoritative and serious consideration while the Tosche's book operates more as stream of consciousness fan's notes.

The Sound Studio - now in 7th edition

The Seventh Edition of 'The Sound Studio' may look much the same (in layout and length) as the previous version, but the content is thoroughly updated (with much new digital material) and plainly has been rewritten in detail throughout. The balance between analogue and digital is right on: as the author points out, sound is primarily an analogue medium - at source, microphone, loudspeaker and ear - with some interesting digital possibilities in the processing and recording, which are now introduced and clearly described.
As before, the book provides a broad overview of the whole field for anyone working in radio, recording, film or (like me) television. For professionals in all branches of these media, it will be invaluable for reference - and comes equipped with an unusually good glossary and extensive index. But I would also recommend it as the ideal introduction to the subject for anyone who wants to work in the real, practical world of sound, including sound in support of picture (as distinct from the nerd's private world of digital gimmickry, which so many other audio books in recent years seem to cater for).
The one thing to watch out for when picking up a copy of this book is to make sure it is the up-to-date 7th edition, not the outdated 5th or 6th, of which some are still to be found in libraries and even some shops. AB

I note that you attached my review to a page on the 6th edition of this book. I've seen that, but do note that it is out of date and is completely superseded by the 2003 7th edition. If you stock this it would be better to put the review on that one (it has a red cover), and delete references to the 6th and previous editions. Incidentally the old version has 'Talbot-Smith' down as a co-author, and to the best of my knowledge, that's completely wrong. AB

Excellent Introduction to Botany

This book is a must for anyone seriously interested in learning about plants and their relation to the other living kingdoms. It is richly illustrated and covers material clearly and in-depth. I have used the first edition for over eight years as 1) a good read and 2) a reference that continues to inform me as a serious gardener as well as an educated layman. The book emphasizes the evolutionary adaptative aspects of plants to their environment. Starting from the basics of chemistry, it covers plant anatomy, physiology, genetics, and taxonomy. It is a wonderful resource.
