AACN Pocket Handbook of Critical Care Nursing

As a new nurse to ICU I have found this pocket guide handy as a reference, a teacher, and for finding information quickly It is easy to use, with a lot of information needed in the adult ICU. It has a very good section on IV medication with dilutions and infusion times. The size of the actual pocket guide itself is somewhat larger than others that I have seen, but it has easy to read print size.

disappointing

I was very disappointed with the pocket handbook for several reasons, the primary being that the ACLS guidelines were not the updated current ones. I also found the small print difficult to read and the use of only black print with no color coding made it hard to search though.

Geotechnical failure is understood here in a broad sense as the failure of a structure to function properly due to a geotechnical reason. Some of the geotechnical failures selected are well known for their impact on the geotechnical community. Others are closer to the author’s experience. They have been organized into three main topics: Settlement, Bearing Capacity and Excavations. They cover a significant proportion of every day’s activity of professional geotechnical engineers. No attempt has been made to create a comprehensive handbook of failures. Instead, the emphasis has been given to creative applications of simple mechanical concepts and well known principles and solutions of Soil Mechanics. The book shows how much can be learned from relatively simple approaches. Despite this emphasis on simplicity, the book provides a deep insight into the cases analyzed. A non-negligible number of new analytical closed-form solutions have also been found. Their derivation can be followed in detail. In all the cases described an effort was made to provide a detailed and step by step description of the hypothesis introduced and of the analysis performed.

It is not an easy task to fascinate a student with a standard course on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. If, however, the same material is presented as a tool to explore a natural or a man-made "disaster", both the motivation and the ability to absorb this material increase dramatically. The case studies in this book could help to build an introductory Forensic Geotechnical Engineering course, covering such basic topics as settlements, bearing capacity and excavations.

The failure cases considered in this book have something in common – they can be all reasonably well explained using so called "back-of-the-envelope" calculations, i.e., without sophisticated models requiring finite element analysis. These simple methods based on clear mechanical considerations are the endangered species of the computer dominated era, though sometimes they could prevent a disaster caused by a wrong application of computer models. In particular, the upper bound limit analysis has repeatedly proven itself as a powerful tool allowing for sufficiently accurate estimates of the failure loads and leaving a lot of room for creativity.

No one is exempt from making mistakes, but repeating well known mistakes reveals a gap in education. One of the objectives of this book is to attempt bridging this gap, at least partially. More failure cases covering a larger area of geotechnical problems are included into the companion book "Geomechanics of Failures: Advanced Topics" by the same authors.

About the Author

Alexander M. Puzrin, born in 1965, studied Structural Engineering at Moscow Institute of Civil Engineers (1982-1987) and Applied Mathematics at Moscow State University (1990). He received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in 1997, where he joined the faculty. In 2002 he became a faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA). He has been Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the ETH Zurich since 2004. Prof. Puzrin has been involved as an expert in geotechnical projects in Russia, Israel and Switzerland. His expertise lies in progressive and catastrophic failure and constitutive modeling of geomaterials. He is the author of more than 60 papers. Awards: Technion Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001; ASCE (Student Chapter) Outstanding Faculty Award in 2003; ICE Bishop Medal in 2004.

Eduardo E. Alonso, born in 1947, got his degree in Civil Engineeering (Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos) in Madrid in June 1969. He got a PhD in Northwestern University in 1973. At present he is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the UPC in Barcelona. He is the author of more than 300 papers published in Proceedings of Conferences and learned journals. Professional activities include foundation problems, deep excavations, nuclear power plants, slope stability, breakwaters, earthdams, tunneling and underground waste disposal. Awards: Thomas Telford Medal (ICE) in 1994 and 2007; Crampton Prize (ICE) in 2006; J. Torán Prize in 1995; N. Monturiol medal in 2000; Second Coulomb lecturer in 2003 and Eleventh Buchanan Lecturer, Texas A&M in 2003; Tenth Sowers Lecturer, GeorgiaTech, Atlanta in 2005. He is member of the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain since 1995 and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Art of Barcelona since 2007.

Núria M. Pinyol, born in 1978, got her degree in Civil Engineering (Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos) in Barcelona in June 2004. At present she is a Researcher of the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE, Barcelona). She has worked on the development of constitutive models for bonded expansive soils and in the analysis and modeling of the geotechnical behaviour of earth and rockfill dams. One of her papers ("A review of Beliche dam") was awarded the Crampton Prize (ICE, UK) in 2006. Her main research interests are: behavior of unsaturated soils, expansive soils and rocks, hard soils and soft rocks, numerical analysis in Geomechanics, dams, slope stability and rapid slides.

Wonderful Murder Mystery, Great Atmosphere

Returning home unexpectedly after being dumped by a man that he met online whom he thought was his forever love, our shy librarian Perry Foster was in no mood for what awaited him in his room, a body in his tub. The dead man disappeared just as quickly when Perry rushed downstairs to get help, and no one believed his story. Since there was no body the Police think he's either a nutcase or drunk. But mild mannered, asthmatic Perry was determined to prove the doubters wrong and find the body as well as the perpetrator of this dastardly deed. He found an ally in an unlikely person, Nick Reno, a former Navy SEAL who, like everyone else, had difficulty believing Perry's story, at first.

The first thing that struck me about this book was its atmosphere. It reminded me of a 1940s film noir with all of the elements that a film buff would expect of the era and the genre - dark, mysterious, shadows everywhere with dubious characters that are sometimes ominous and threatening. The house where everyone lived was the former mansion of a Hollywood celebrity and her husband decades ago, now it is reduced to being a seedy boarding house with a big secret but also poor lighting, bad heating and ventilation, and the landlady from hell. The story is full of quirky characters down on their luck (why else would someone live in a boarding house) all of whom have muddy pasts, their own secrets and possible motives to commit a murder or two. Inside the house where the temperature was almost as frigid as the outdoors, this friendly mob try to stay warm and remain alive as other motives emerge that might tempt their neighbours to commit more dastardly crimes. Greed is such a compelling motivation.

Perry's and Nick's relationship was unique and at times one sided. Nick was moving to another state in a couple of weeks and he did not want to give Perry any hope of a possible future for them, but Perry, the little charmer, had his own plans and I loved the way his character became dominant and manipulative at times and Nick could only go along for the ride. Nick was quite willing to help with the murder investigation but that was as far as he was prepared to go.

Whenever I read a Josh Lanyon murder mystery I pay attention because I want to solve the crime before the end of the book. This author always introduces many characters in his mysteries, any one of whom could be the killer, and false clues abound as he tries to confound his readers and outwit them as they encounter many phony trails that lead nowhere. Usually I'm pretty good at solving mysteries having done so for decades in books, but this time I have to admit that I was almost stumped as I got closer to the end of the story, with few suspects left, when I eventually solved the crime. I could tell you whodunit but I would have to kill you. If possible it is my humble opinion that the author is getting better at constructing his mysteries, and he sucks the readers in by letting them think they have the perpetrator nailed, before he makes fools of us all yet again.

What did I love best about The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks? Always the characters which is where Josh Lanyon excels and he seems to outdo himself with every new story. Perry reminded me of Clark Kent with his mild mannered persona that's smart, clever and stubborn and he seemed to have certain similarities to another famous amateur sleuth in Mr. Lanyon's books, but when he's in full Superman mode he's totally unstoppable. Nick Reno who is his foil in this story and ultimately his love interest, is no match for Perry intellectually or in street smarts, even though he is physically stronger and has the usual attributes of a former Navy SEAL - brave, intrepid and great investigative skills

This book proves once again what a master craftsman this author is in character and plot development. None of the characters was "over the top" although each one was quite distinctive; the flow of the story was beautifully done as the tension mounted and the personalities morphed before my eyes when the stress became too much for their fragile psyches. Reading a murder mystery is always a journey for me rather than a destination and The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks provided a wonderfully crafted map to the final goal of solving the crime. I think readers will find that the best part of this book is not the satisfaction of unraveling the clues and identifying the perpetrator (if you do get there) but the wonderful prose of this skillful and talented author who has given me hours of enjoyment as I journey through his world.

The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks is definitely a 'keeper" and I highly recommend it, even if you're not a fan of murder mysteries.

Murder, Mystery & Romance

A wonderful "Haunted House" mystery from Josh Lanyon. It has all the best ingredients: a reputedly haunted old mansion turned into apartments and populated by as colorful an assortment of weird and suspicious characters as you could wish for (except for the two leads, of course: one is a cute artist, the other is a studly ex-Navy SEAL).

The opening is classic: the hero finds a dead body in his bathtub, runs to raise the alarm and when the cluless cops and everyone go to look, it's gone. No one believes him, naturally.There are creaking, dragging noises in the walls at night; a crazy old lady wandering through the house at all hours; a missing stash of stolen jewels; a climactic gun battle, you name it.

The book is also a M/M romance, for those who need to know, one way or the other. Ringing yet another change on the ancient erastes/eromenos theme (both parties are adults, btw), Mr. Lanyon generates as much, if not more, suspense here as he does with the murder mystery. There's also a relevant, cautionary plot element about the risks of pursuing that modern chimera, the internet `"relationship."

Written in Mr. Lanyon's usual master craftsman style, with razor sharp dialog and fun cultural references, the book is a delight to read - and you won't want to put it down until the last body has tumbled out of the closet.

Great new book of Josh Lanyon - worth a sequel or two

And to think that I nearly missed this @_@ The new gay mystery of Josh Lanyon was a wonderful read - I was so stricken with it I finished it in one night. And I mean that literally, I read from 8 in the afternoon til I finished it at 3 in the morning (The next day at work was not-so-good ^^;;).
It has a really unique setting in that remote old Vermont estate, a cast full of weird characters, a fascinating mystery plot and a totally adorable pairing in Perry and Nick. At one time in the book Nick thinks Perry is someone who grows on you - well he didn't have with me, he had me from page one ^_^
The sort of their relationship was like the one between Adrien and Jake in Josh Lanyons Adrien English mystery series. But here the seme character Nick was much more likable than the Jake character in this other series.
And what was very important for me was this is a gay mysteries with some nice romance in it but not, as so often these days, erotica with some small mystery somewhere. And not only for that I would love to read more about those two and I am hoping for a sequel. I strongly recommend this for fans of romantic gay mysteries and for mysteries in general too.

The Other & Harvest Home/The Best Horror Novel 's 70's

I've read hundreds of horror books in my lifetime, 39 yrs. to be exact, but very few have fascinated me or stayed with me like this book, called The Other. This is the most realistic horror novel ever written (I have read it 5 times) and I absolutely love it. There are no devils, aliens, or monsters of any kind, just two psychologicaly messed up kids(which one is the evil one? or is it both?) who play an imagination game that goes horribly out of control, awesome twist ending, this book will keep you riveted for hours on end. Mr. Tryon creates characters that are so true to life you swear you met them before or they really existed at some time. This book is intelligent horror written by a late great author who doesn't suffer from verbal diarrhea like some of the popular present day writers. Harvest Home is another novel written in the early seventies that is just as creepy with a stunning ending, I loved it! If you enjoy The Other here are a few books you might want to look up : Harvest Home-Thomas Tryon, Conjure Wife-Fritz Leiber, The Nightwalker-Thomas Tessier, The Manitou-Graham Masterson, The Godsend-Bernard Taylor, After Sundown-Randall Boyll, The Homing-Jeffrey Campbell, For Fear of the Night-Charles L. A truly great horror story

Once upon a time there was a somewhat forgettable actor named Thomas Tryon who starred in a series of very forgettable movies ("The Cardinal" and a few others). Mr. Tryon wisely decided to forget about the forgettable and sat down and wrote a spooky novel called "The Other". The result is an absolutely superb, un-put-downable, unforgettable horror story.

"The Other" tells us the story of the Perry twins, Niles and Holland, 13 years old, identical twins born on either side of midnight and thus have not only different birthdays, but, in a true stroke of fictional genius, different astrological signs. They are thus as different as day from night, one friendly and sunny and outgoing, and the other deep, dark and diabolically evil. Their father is dead, their mother imprisoned inside her own creeping madness, and their grandmother, blessed or cursed with the Sight, is unable to stop the horror that is about to engulf the whole family.

The story takes place mostly during a long, lazy Connecticut summer in the 1930's, and as the temperature cools down, the plot heats up. Two-thirds of the way through the book, Tryon divulges the twins' secret that will literally rock the reader in his tracks. You would think the rest of the book would be an anti-climax after this; fasten your seatbelts, because now you're in for a real ride. And hang on tight: Tryon piles one horror on top of another until you wonder if he has anything left in his bag of tricks, and then he pulls it out: a climax that will knock you over. And as if all this wasn't enough, the last page of the book will leave the reader wondering if Tryon was pulling the wool over everyone's eyes and have you guessing for days.

Tryon may have been a mediocre actor, but he proved to be an excellent writer as well as a great storyteller. Plot, characters, and writing are just about perfect in this book. Like Stephen King in his earliest and best books, Tryon has the gift of understatement, and he knows how to let the horror build up ever so slowly and insidiously until the reader is totally wrapped up and can't escape. He also has a delightful touch with small but telling period descriptions that set the novel firmly in its time frame (do any older readers recall Mr. Coffee Nerves and Belle Sharmeers?). "The Other" has been out of print for some time now, but it's finally being re-printed and it's about time. I've treasured mine since the year it was published. It is, quite simply, one of the best suspense/horror stories ever written.

A Brilliant Depiction of the Darkness of the Mind

In prose as easy as a floating dream with a story as frightening as a pre-dawn nightmare, Thomas Tryon's 1971 novel THE OTHER is one of the three finest horror novels of 20th Century America, easily ranking alongside Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and Stephen King's 'SALEM'S LOT.

Holland and Niles Perry are twins on the brink of adolescence, residing with their large extended family on a comfortably ramshackle farm in 1930s New England. But their lives have been touched with tragedy: their father, killed in an accident; their mother, unable to recover from the shock. Grandmother Ada, Russian-born, has become the backbone of the family. And Grandmother Ada has a game for them to play together, a solace for them in a time of grief. But it is no ordinary game, this. It is one passed down through the blood from generation to generation. And it is through this game of the mind that Ada unwittingly unleashes a psychological horror that consumes everything it touches.

THE OTHER is the first of the several novels Tryon wrote before his premature death and, although the novel HARVEST HOME is perhaps more widely remembered, to my mind it is his finest. The plot has been extremely influential, and some readers may recognize various turns from having encountered them at the less talented hands of later writers who shamelessly borrowed Tyron's ideas. But it hardly matters: the prose is absolutely flawless, dreamy, languid, and seductive even as it begins to unravel into a psychological void from which there is no return. It is a rare reader who will not unravel right along with it--and immediately re-read the novel to see how Tyron has so unerringly cast his spell. Strongly recommended.
