Eleanor and Harry grew up in different worlds. Their alliance was often strained, as they represented diverse, and sometimes opposing, political traditions. Truman, who had spent much of his youth on a Missouri farm, reflected the values and work ethic of rural America. Eleanor, born into New York society, was a constant advocate of reform. Despite their differences, they maintained a warm and sympathetic correspondence after Truman took office, and he designated Mrs. Roosevelt the "First Lady of the World." Steve Neal has collected, in Eleanor and Harry, the correspondence between Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. The 254 letters were written between April 16, 1945 (four days after FDR's death), and mid-December, 1960 (23 months before Eleanor Roosevelt's death). While many of the letters are brief and quotidian, a good number of them concern large issues, both global and national, among them the restoration of post-war Europe; the Korean War; the role and effectiveness of the nascent United Nations (Roosevelt served the Truman administration as a member of the U.S. delegation to the General Assembly); the fraught, mercurial jostling of the cold war; and Democratic Party appointments. Though the two hardly saw eye-to-eye on all issues, their letters were unfailingly respectful. Neal provides a context for many of these letters, which he arranges chronologically. As well, he has written a brief introduction and epilogue, and a helpful, if basic, bibliography. --H. O'Billovich

Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman enjoyed a relationship unique in American history. Virtually strangers before the death of FDR, afterward the two became close friends and began exchanging letters on everything from their health and the weather to Democratic politics and global communism. Now, in this collection of over 250 of their letters ably edited and introduced by Chicago Sun-Times political columnist Neal (Harry and Ike), the full extent of their friendship finally becomes apparent. Truman, Neal makes clear, admired Mrs. Roosevelt greatly, calling her the "First Lady of the World." She, in turn, thought he was a "good man" and wanted to help him however she could. But the two also disagreed on many issues, and Mrs. Roosevelt was never shy about expressing her opinion. In her letters, she rebuked Truman for the "loyalty boards" designed to root out communists (he later agreed with her) and shamed him into investigating discrimination against Japanese-Americans. For his part, Truman staunchly defended his support of noncommunist regimes in Greece and Turkey (the beginnings of the "Truman Doctrine") and delicately asserted that she was too naive about Stalinist Russia. Yet Truman also trusted Mrs. Roosevelt immensely, and told her things he could tell few others ("The difficulties with Churchill are very nearly as exasperating as they are with the Russians," he wrote after the frustrating negotiations to end the war). On her end, Mrs. Roosevelt never hesitated to offer kindness and support. "My congratulations on your courage... you have done the right thing," she wrote to Truman after he fired General MacArthur. These are letters without parallel. As Neal points out, just try to imagine Jacqueline Kennedy and LBJ writing these letters, or George H.W. Bush and Nancy Reagan. This collection is a valuable contribution to early Cold War scholarship, as well as a fascinating window into two titanic figures in American history.

They were an odd match, the former First Lady who would have preferred to leave the White House after two terms and the accidental president who had not initially sought the presidency. In more than 250 letters between Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman from 1945 through 1960, readers encounter the active and flexible personalities behind both correspondents, who often differed but eventually grew to admire each other. Neal, a political columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, former White House correspondent, and author of five books, including Harry and Ike: The Partnership That Remade the Postwar World, uncovered these unpublished letters while working on that volume. He inserts useful introductory remarks throughout the text, which is arranged chronologically, and also provides brief epilogs. Truman appointed the former First Lady as a delegate to the United Nations to shore up his support among liberal Democrats. Though she often came close to resigning, he took pride in making her "the First Lady of the World," a title Eisenhower tried to deny her but could not, just as he could not deny that Truman would become a folk hero to many including Republicans. He was a farm boy, the descendant of Missouri pioneers. She was a debutante of the New York aristocracy. On April 12th, 1945, her husband and his boss, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, died in office. Mrs. Roosevelt summoned Vice-president Truman to the White House and said, "Harry, the president is dead." "Is there anything I can do for you?" he asked, and Mrs. Roosevelt replied, "Is there anything we can do you? For you are the one in trouble now."

Thus begins a correspondence that will last until their deaths, here collected by editor Steve Neal to give the reader a top-of-the-heap, behind-the-headlines look at the end of World War II, the Marshall Plan, the creation of the state of Israel, public versus private schooling, Eleanor's opinion of the British (not high, wait till you see how she tells Harry to handle Churchill), Harry's opinion of American hate crimes against Japanese Americans (he's damn lucky this letter wasn't released to the public back then), and much more. Eleanor is at first a little patronizing, a little arrogant, and more than a little disingenuous in many protestations of "oh you don't have listen to little old me, but as long as you are..." Harry is at first a little defensive, a little impatient, and more than a little dismissive of Eleanor's opinions, particular of people she wants in office and he doesn't. By his second term, Harry has grown into his new job, Eleanor has grown into hers, and they both grow into what eventually reads like a friendship of sincere mutual respect and even affection.

A great book to read following a Truman biography

This book is a compilation of letters exchanged between Harry Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt during Truman's presidency. The book has an easy-to-read style largely because the author adds dialog to explain the situations, events, and results of what the letters mention. By using this dialog-letter combination, a great deal of history is presented in an entertaining manner.
I would highly recommend this book as a followup immediately after reading the biography Truman, by David McCullough. With a little bit of Truman history, not only will you find this book a great source of behind the scenes information, you'll also discover that the letters written by Eleanor Roosevelt are a joy to read. She was truly a gifted writer with the ability to put emotions and thoughts into the written word in a manner that could be described as artistic.

Steve Neal has compiled some 250 letters between Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman when he took office after the death of Franklin Roosevelt. In this small but thoughtful book, Neal combines commentary pertinent to the times or to the letter itself. While they disagreed on many things, he repeatedly asked her to write to him with her thoughts on events of the day, which she did and with great candor. President Truman was the first to call Mrs. Roosevelt "First Lady of the World." I heartily recomment this book to those who wish to know these two great people a bit better.

About the Author
Rose Carrarini opened Rose Bakery, a small bakery, shop and restaurant in Paris, with her husband Jean-Charles in 2002. After working in the fashion industry for ten years, the Carrarinis set up Villandry, their first food venture, in London in 1988. This `epicerie fine' in Marylebone inspired many other food places in London, and formed the foundation for their work at Rose Bakery.

I really kind of love this book

I really kind of love this book. I gave it one less star because it doesn't offer so much in the way of recipes. If you want tasty and easy recipes for tea time, I would recommend "The Perfect Afternoon Tea Recipe Book." This book is more a biography of a bakery. You meet the owners, suppliers, customers. You view menus, daily prep, the state of the kitchen after the lunch rush. There is something very sentimental about the book. The reader gets emotionally involved with the daily routine of this bakery in Paris. You are given recipes, but I found these to be pretty advanced; I never felt motivated to try any of them. I like to visit this book often, but mostly as an imaginative excursion to Paris.

Great elevation of simple meals to star status!

I purchased the book as research for a farmer's market booth I run selling individual desserts and baked goods. I had heard good things about the book but was not really prepared for the awesome 'take' the book has on their preparations and display and general commentary. Wow! great ideas for me and a terrific show-me type book for anyone who wants to elevate their usual standard breakfast, lunch and tea fair with simple but elegant ideas and recipes.

First the recipes are laid out with both weight measures and (let's just call it American....) cup and tablespoon measures so it's simple to use and follow. The directions for each recipe are concisely written, questions anticipated and answered and some of the most mouth-watering recipes are accompanied by a gorgeous photo. Caveat here is this is a cafe in Paris/London/Tokyo that is quite successful due to its style and food; it's not mid-west America, bacon and eggs, chips and beer, backyard bbq or church social food. It's European food, European style, small plates that you savor, no plate decorations, no wow factors to detract from honest simple elegant food. Just one read through of their lunch tarts should dispel any ideas you formed that these are tired and sad little renditions of quiche! Furthermore their idea of a salad or actually the salad display they put out each day for lunch is creative and imaginative and everything I want to dig into for lunch. Yum! No little over-worked spring mix salads here, no micro-lettuce things or arugula stuffed anythings but simple presentations of market fruits and vegetables that are available in season. And every ingredient is something you are familiar with and have on hand or easily picked up at the market/store.

Breakfast, lunch and tea are three daily times that food makes all the difference in the world. It should be straight forward, no frills, delicious, easy to put together, enough to satisfy hunger and sweet tooth. I think these recipes do this perfectly. The baked goods are good solid examples of simple ingredients coming together with great impact and flavor. The tea breads, cakes and tarts are all something I would slow down my afternoon to enjoy. I'm especially hooked on the cheesecake!! This will certainly figure prominently in my next farmer's market offerings.

I took away many things from this book: their food preparation, their display style, their recipe simplicity, their focus on natural ingredients and the fact that they have paired down the over-use of some ingredients like sugar. My interests are different from yours or everyone else's but I really think that there is a lot in this book to capture your interest and imagination and creativity should you want simple and elegant recipes for those meals that we need but don't place too much emphasis or time on. It's worth the price just for the granola and tart recipes alone.....oh! and the cheesecake!

English and french breakfast, lunch and afternoon basics with some global flavors

Really, it's 4.5 stars.
You have your cozy English pastries like scones and quickbreads; you have French lunch staples like savory tarts and soup and salad; you have a few Italian-influenced recipes like ricotta cheesecake and personal pizzettes -- logical, as the bakery is based in Paris and the owners are British and Italian.

But that's not all: you also get recipes for a variety of cookies and effortless celebration desserts (no layer cakes though), as well as some creative modern and global ingredients for a twist on traditional favorites (red beans bars, broccoli loaf, breakfast quinoa).

The pictures from the bakery and its suppliers (friendly farmers and -- my personal favorite -- a solipsistic baker) really capture the vibe of the place, which is trendy yet understated, with a sophisticated multicultural clientele and barebones decor. Thankfully, the personal stories that are so "in" right now in the cookbook world are told briefly in the beginning and mostly photographically later. We dive into the recipes without having to hear every childhood memory the author has associated with the fare.

My only gripe: I wish the collection was more complete, so that it could be my only resource for brunch basics, my favorite meal to host. So I wish there were more varieties of eggs. But for that I might have to get the author's other book, How to Boil an Egg.

Can I give 2 stars to Knuth?

I apologize for giving 2 stars to D. Knuth. Who am I to give such bad rating to him?

As I said, I do not feel comfortable giving 2 stars to D. Knuth. Not at all. However, I think that this is not a book at all but a code listing. Even more, it costs 100 $!
Looking that example of CWEB[...] usage, I do not think I will ever use it.

As an experiment on automatic documentation it is worth taking a look... not to that book but to the CWEB project. However, I do not see the benefit of printing that book. I would rather prefer reading an extension in his Volume 1, Fascicle 1 (Art of Computing Programming).

Let's be fair... At least it is interesting to read Knuth code style. Millions times better better than my own :P

Helps you guess better

This book teaches you how to guess better through systematically, by making assumptions and checking them. Then adjusting those assumptions

if the numbers are way off. I find the technique quite useful and I believe schools should teach students how to guestimate.

The issue that I have with the book is that it does not talk much about the limitations of guesstimates. After all guesstimate is slightly better than no

answer in lot of times and also is just process to think about how you would do it if you had the resources. Also, the author does not

talk much about over simplification. Einstein says things that "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."

But assumptions in the book, simplifies things WAY TOO MUCH!

However, despite these two limitations, I strongly recommend this book. Also, I encourage young readers to read this book because it will help you think and teach you to make assumptions, and check the reasonableness of your assumptions.

Great when you are thinking on your feet

This books has been a life changer. I always wondered how do CEOs, Product Managers, etc who deal with numbers make guesses that are near perfect. They have this ability to make those guesses. I always wondered how.

I stumbled upon this book by chance and the title seemed interesting. I bought this one and it was a life changing experience. This book teaches you how to guess with great accuracy. Amazing. After going through the first few exercises, I started using this skill in everyday life and it works! I was able to surprise people around me with my new found skill. This is an invaluable resource for anyone. You just need to be able to organize the data that you already know. This book teaches how to do it.

I am planning to get the guesstimation 2.0 book too.

brilliant and fun

Some of us are older than we want to admit and have to get back into math. This book was recommended by a colleague at Johns Hopkins University. So I dove in. It was worth the read. It has softly reintroduced me to mathematical problem solving. The authors were great. Humorists and instructors. If you were hoping to get a review of differential equations... This is not for you. If you want to be reminded of the fun utilities to be found in math, get your copy. I would highly recommend this for guys like me.
