About the Author
Krishna G. Palepu is the Ross Graham Walker Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean for International Development at the Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Prior to assuming his current administrative position, Professor Palepu held other positions at the school, including Senior Associate Dean, Director of Research, and Chair, Accounting and Control Unit. Professor Palepu's current research and teaching activities focus on strategy and governance. In the area of strategy, his recent focus has been on the globalization of emerging markets. In the area of corporate governance, Professor Palepu's work focuses on how to make corporate boards more effective, and on improving corporate disclosure. Professor Palepu teaches these topics in several HBS programs aimed at members of corporate boards: "How to make corporate boards more effective, "Audit Committees in the new era of governance, "Compensation Committees: Preparing the challenges ahead." Professor Palepu has done extensive research on mergers and acquisitions and corporate disclosure. Based on this work, he coauthored the book, Business Analysis and Valuation: Text and Cases, which won the American Accounting Association's Wildman Award for its impact on management practice, as well as the Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award for its impact on academic research. This book, translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish, is widely used in leading MBA programs all over the world. It is accompanied by a business analysis and valuation software model published by the Harvard Business School Publishing Company. Professor Palepu has a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration.

Paul M. Healy is James R. Williston Professor of Business Administration, and Unit Head, Accounting and Management, at Harvard Business School, Harvard University. Professor Healy joined Harvard Business School as a Professor of Business Administration in 1997. Professor Healy received his B.C.A. Honors (1st Class) in Accounting and Finance from Victoria University, New Zealand in 1977, his M.S. in Economics from the University of Rochester in 1981, his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Rochester in 1983, and is a New Zealand CPA. In New Zealand, Professor Healy worked for Arthur Young and ICI. Prior to joining Harvard, Professor Healy spent fourteen years on the faculty at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, where he received awards for teaching excellence in 1991, 1992, and 1997. He is the co-author of one of the leading financial analysis textbooks, Business Analysis & Valuation. In 1993-94 he served as Deputy Dean at the Sloan School, and in 1994-95 he visited London Business School and Harvard Business School. Professor Healy's research includes studies of the role and performance of financial analysts, how firms' disclosure strategies affect their costs of capital, the performance of merging firms after mergers, and managers' financial reporting decisions. His work has been published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial Economics. In 1990, his article "The Effect of Bonus Schemes on Accounting Decisions," published in Journal of Accounting and Economics, was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award. His text Business Analysis & Valuation was awarded the AICPA/AAA's Wildman Medal for contributions to the practice in 1997 and the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award in 1998

Victor L. Bernard, who passed away November 14, 1995, was Director of the Paton Accounting Center at the University of Michigan and Director of Research for the American Accounting Association.

Economics meet Accounting

I think this book does a good job emphasizing the importance of economic analysis in financial analysis. It doesn't matter how good a balance sheet is, if the firm is in a competitive industry, abnormal profits will not be sustainable. I also felt the book did a great job explaining common accounting tricks of companies. However, if you want a book on valuation, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Succinct and Practical Help — Very Helpful

This book not only succinctly ties everything I have already learned in overcoming my emotional childhood wounds, but has also been extremely helpful in understanding and addressing the wound that made it difficult for me to receive love.

The structure of this book makes it very helpful to work through your wounds. The self-assessment test were very helpful in identifying my own particular fear issue. Furthermore, providing the behavior triggers and behavioral reactions to my particular fear trigger was extremely helpful. Although I am already familiar with much of the information in the remainder of the book, it still helped bring clarity to dealing my own emotional wound in a more healthy manner.

This book is filled with lots of practical exercises with examples to walk you through the healing process. In fact, as a whole, these exercises are more practically helpful than any other book I have read on overcoming trauma (not the only great book though: Rewire Your Brain, Daring to Trust, Learned Optimism, Willpower Instinct and Charisma Myth were also great. Each touch on key principles addressed in this particular book). The chapter on communication covered a variety of important topics, but also done in a succinct manner that makes it easy to incorporate as I open myself for Building Lasting, Loving Relationships.

If you are new to the overcoming the fears and wounds of the past, this is a great book to start.

If you are like me and have been working through your wounds for some time, then this book very well may bring a simplified clarity to the whole process. I can actually live the advice in this book in my life presently. I don't have to spend months trying to get a grasp of my wound. I can now live the life I am working towards. I personally got what I needed from this book, even with the needed exercises, within one day. I am glad I bought it and highly recommend it.

Excellent!

Thank you Michelle Skeen. I can not put this book down. I can not believe how helpful this book is. It is teaching me how to let go of my damaging ways of thinking that I have learned over the years. That thinking includes not trusting, self-loathing and self-sabotage. These hardwired feelings were destroying my relationship with my husband. A relationship I do not want to lose. I started seeking out why I could not trust. Was I right by following my intuition that he was cheating on me. That every time he did something nice there was an ulterior motive. If he didn't answer my texts or calls that gave me validity of my thoughts. Who would ever think that maybe it could have something to do with my self preservation process? And, god forbid, he might have other reasons for not answering my texts or calls. If you have any thoughts like I do, this book is a relationship saver.

Skeen does a beautiful job of leading readers not only on a journey ...

As a clinical psychology trainee pursuing a doctoral degree, I have ample reading to do, but this book was an absolute pleasure to read. Dr. Skeen does a beautiful job of leading readers not only on a journey of healing, but also on a journey of discovering why and how their early patterns of interaction are perpetuated. Many texts cover how to solve the present issue, but few cover the root of the issue, which, if addressed, can lead to deeper levels of self-understanding and reaching a place of peace. The text is laid out in an accessible manner so the reader can easily follow along, and it is evident that Dr. Skeen has invested a lot of time into fully researching schema therapy, as well as practicing it. Her writing style is clear and engaging; she really connects with readers as if she is sitting in the chair across from them in a session. Through her words Michelle communicates empathy with readers, and her use of vignettes helps those fearing abandonment understand that this is a very real, prevalent struggle, but also one that they can overcome. I would consider this to be a text not only for those who wish to explore their own relationships, but also for clinicians and trainees as well. Bravo on this one! Great read that I am happy to have added to my library for practice in the future.

About the Author
John K. Halvey is a partner in the New York office of the international law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley, & McCloy, LLP and the founder of the Strategic Sourcing and Technology Group. He practices in all areas of technology and sourcing law, with particular emphasis on information technology and business process outsourcing and private equity transactions involving technology or sourcing companies.
Mr. Halvey has represented companies in many of the largest technology, telecommunications, and business processing outsourcing transactions, including Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, BellSouth, Panasonic, Citigroup, DuPont, AT&T, Alcatel, Xerox, Boeing, Bombardier, General Atlantic and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
His work in these areas has been the subject of articles in Forbes, Information Week, Computer World, CIO Magazine, The Daily Deal, and Venture Capital Journal. Mr. Halvey has for many years been ranked by Chambers and Partners as one of the world’s leading information technology and outsourcing lawyers and was the only lawyer in the United States to be ranked a "Star Performer" in the outsourcing industry in both 2005 and 2006. In 2006 Mr. Halvey received the Chambers Shield of Excellence as the Outsourcing Attorney of the Year and as the HR Outsourcing Attorney of the Year by the HROA.
In 1995 Crain’s named Mr. Halvey on its list of the 40 most successful people under 40 in New York City. He is the coauthor of Information Technology Outsourcing Transactions: Process, Strategies, and Contracts (John Wiley & Sons, 2005).

Barbara M. Melby is a partner in the Global Outsourcing Group at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP. Ms. Melby’s practice focuses primarily on outsourcing transactions, including information technology and business process outsourcing, as well as other technology-related transactions, including development agreements, system implementation agreements, licensing and hosting agreements, technology services, joint ventures, and strategic alliances.
One of the leading outsourcing attorneys in the United States, Ms. Melby is the coauthor of Information Technology Outsourcing: Process, Strategies, and Contracts (John Wiley & Sons, 2005). She was recently recognized by Chambers USA as one of the nation’s leading lawyers for Business Process Outsourcing.
In addition to her two books, she has written numerous articles in and has been widely quoted in a wide variety of publications, including CIO Magazine, IT World, The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel, and The Pennsylvania Lawyer. Ms. Melby is also a frequent speaker on outsourcing and technology transactions at various business, legal, and professional conferences.

Practical Contracting Process, Templates, and Tools

I have an older version of this book (2000) and have referred to it frequently when considering outsourcing, in thinking through partnering potentials, and in considering consultant hires. Halvey & Melby systematically walk you through the things you need to consider including: planning, defining the scope, vendor selection, negotiations, contracting, measuring performance, human resources, projects, international considerations, post and re-negotiation activities, and termination.

BPO 2nd edition review

The book is quite interesting in matter of setting an initial framework for BPO contracts, provisions and so forth. However I do think that it lacks a little in depth in matters of theoretical BPO foundation and/or importance. Every piece of information within the book is not quite up to date, which means it has content from 2005 and backwards, no recent developments ins regard to the topic exist.

A second look at Jim

This book was a good book about Jim Morrison and told an abbreviated version of his life story that if you read "No One Here Gets Out Alive", you can skip the first part of the book. I enjoyed the second interview half of the book after already having read "N One Here Gets Out Alive" also by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman, I grazed over the first part of the book. The book arrived without a jacket and was advertised with one, but I bought it used and that is not a reflection poorly on Amazon. The book is a good read and if you want to have another view of Jim Morrison, this book will not disappoint. It is well written and the pace is good. It has a good flow and I did not find myself stuck in the middle of the book as I do with so many biographies that start off stung and finish poorly. This is a good book and worth the price.

About the Author
Gary Koop is Professor of Economics at the University of Strathclyde. He has published numerous articles in Bayesian econometrics and statistics in journals such as Journal of Econometrics, Journal of the American Statistical Association and the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics. He is an associate editor for several journals, including Journal of Econometrics and Journal of Applied Econometrics. He is the author of the books Bayesian Econometrics, Analysis of Economic Data and Analysis of Financial Data.

Dale J. Poirier is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Irvine. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, the American Statistical Association, and the Journal of Econometrics. He has been on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Econometrics, Econometric Theory, and was the founding editor of Econometric Reviews. His professional activities have been numerous, and he has held elected positions in the American Statistical Association and the International Society for Bayesian Analysis. Previous books include Intermediate Statistics and Econometrics: A Comparative Approach and The Econometrics of Structural Change.

Justin L. Tobias is Associate Professor of Economics, Iowa State University, and has also served as an Assistant/Associate Professor of Economics at the University of California, Irvine. Professor Tobias has authored numerous articles in leading journals, including the International Economic Review, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Econometrics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics.

One good thing about this book is that there're lots of Bayesian model examples that you can search for. So, it's super pratical! On the other hand, if you want to dig deeply the Bayesian theories, then you need another kind of textbook.

I was looking for a little more explanation - but this is good. It is a little mathy, and I like other bayes econ books a little better. If you have some extra cash and are building a library - good book. If you need one text - others might be better.

Comprehensive but a bit difficult to understand sometimes

I dabble in electronics as a hobby so a lot of times I will come across something with which I am unfamiliar. In those instances, a good reference is indispensable. I browsed this dictionary in a store once, and the entries I happened to look up were concise and thorough. However, it didn't seem worth the hundred dollars they were asking in the store (especially since the latest edition is over ten years old) so I picked it up on Amazon for about half that. After using it for a while I have discovered that some of the entries use language that is a bit technical for the hobbyist, but I can usually figure out what it is conveying if I think about it for a while, and perhaps cross-reference the material with another source like the Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary of Electronics by John Douglas-Young (which is written very clearly, but is much less comprehensive, with fewer entries, and is over twenty years old). I would actually give this book three and half stars. It's pretty good but not great.

While some are basic to all-around good health (e.g., taking a multivitamin, not smoking, limiting alcohol), others might surprise: consuming apple juice and vinegar, meditating, and surfing the Internet. Although Carper admits she has not tried all of them, she recommends that readers experiment with those best suited to their situations. Even a few nutritional (a Mediterranean diet) and lifestyle (exercise, stress relief, sleep) changes, she states, can gain as much as a decade disease-free, and by supplementing with anti-Alzheimer's powerhouses like niacin, choline, folic acid, and alpha lipoic acid, readers can push mental decline even further into the future. Whether in their 20s or well into retirement, readers will likely feel motivated to do the impossible: beat the approaching epidemic of a disease commonly viewed as hopeless.

OK for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time with it, or only find a few easy things to do to prevent it, but if someone is serious, then "Stop Alzheimer's Now!: How to Prevent & Reverse Dementia, Parkinson's..." is a much better book.

Good information, easy to read

Everyone beyond a certain age should be concerned about Alzheimer's. It is a terrible disease. While there is no Alzheimer's in my family, it is a concern. So when a friend who does have Alzheimer's in her family recommended this book, I decided to buy it.

The theory is that you remove yourself from the pool of people who statistically get Alzheimer's. So if Alzheimer's patients have been sedentary, you should exercise, and these are some good ones. If Alzheimer's patients usually have balance problems, you should improve your balance, and here's how. Each trait has a chapter, usually rather short, easy to read, based on studies, but not bogged down in the details that only scientists are interested in. I'm half through the book, and so far the ideas are the ones that we all know are good for you, nothing bizarre.

It makes a lot of sense, is not difficult to follow, and you might even avoid Alzheimer's. It certainly can't hurt, and if it introduces you to new healthy habits, so much the better.

You must buy this book!

I have reviewed over 250 books (many of my reviews are categorized under the name of my publishing company, And Then Some Publishing, LLC), but this one -- among them all so far -- is one that should be read by everyone.

If you believe the title, Carper's book is about Alzheimer's and age-related memory loss, but when you read the book you quickly realize it is a book about healthy living, having a healthy lifestyle, and following a regimen that will bring you strength, vitality, and wellness.

100 suggestions seems like a lot; however, when you get going (each suggestion only takes up two or three pages) in this small, 294-page book. She has over 200 references for the book, and she gives you the web site where you can go to check out her sources:

What I especially enjoy is finding a book that underscores and supports the lifestyle that I have already adopted. I found that many of the suggestions by Carper are things I am already doing. Most healthy readers will find the same thing; however, most healthy readers (like myself) will also be interested in obtaining just a little more, going for that extra edge (the extra mile), and not just getting their current lifestyle reinforced but finding something that pushes them a little harder, a little farther, too.

A couple of the suggestions I have highlighted include #24, "Build `Cognitive Reserve'--Fill up your brain with lots of fascinating stuff." That idea delighted me because of the book reviews and essays I write. I think loving school, too, helps anyone build a cognitive reserve right from the outset. Getting immersed in information, learning, knowledge, and experiences builds a useful lifelong benefit.

In addition to writing about the importance of higher education, Carper also upholds the value of reading and writing in her #56, "Learn to Love Language -- Linguistic skills build bigger, smarter, stronger brains" (p. 168).

There are so many of her ideas that are just smart and worthy of adoption. Whether you have heard much of this before, Carper offers the research to support her ideas. We all need reminders to live properly and to be concerned about good health.

Two parts of the book need highlighting. First, within each chapter Carper ends with "What to do?" where she translates what she has said in explaining the idea of the chapter into practical, down-to-earth, specific kinds of things readers can do to achieve the results they want. For example, in #80, "Get a Good Night's Sleep," she writes as the first sentence of "What to do?": "Don't think of sleep as an inconvenience but as a legitimate way to subdue some of the brain's most devastating enemies. Take naps. . . . (pp. 233-234).

Also, the second part of the book that needs highlighting, I thought her section at the back of the book, "Putting it all together: Your anti-Alzheimer's plan" was especially good for it underscored what everyone can begin doing right now -- or, in other words, what the absolute, bottom-line, essentials are that can be started immediately: 1) surprise your brain, 2) get physical activity, 3) eat the right stuff and take supplements, and 4) take care of yourself.

You must buy this book! (I'm encouraging my wife and my other family members to read it. It's that good!) We purchased copies of the book and gave it as a gift to each of our four adult children.
