Amazing Tale of Obsession

Loved it! This book belongs in a category of its own. It's not quite like anything else I've ever read. It's romantic and erotic without really being either romantic or erotic. Everything feels as though it's only implied and never really shown; so you just get glimpses here and there of what's going on between the two characters. The ending left me sad and bewildered, yet I can't see any other way this story could have ended. I really wish the author would have written another book or even just an essay telling us all more about the aftermath of this affair before she died. But maybe the mystery is part of what's so intriguing about this story. I'd say if you're even considering reading this book, just do it! It's short and sweet but will leave you thinking long beyond the last page.

The most intoxicating book I have every read

I want to start by qualifying the above mentioned one line review - I understand the depth and seriousness of this situation and would never encourage anyone to enter this type of relationship - however, once I bagan the book, I read it straight thru. I think the second most intoxicating book/books I have read are the Vampire Chronicles - Book I and Book II. Anyway...back to the subject at hand.
The first time I read this book I was in my mid-twenties and now I am 41. I once loaned this book out never to have it returned to me. Now I am desparately in search of a copy.
I loved it so - the depth of her needs - her submissiveness which nearly killed her is to me extremely intriguing. As I enter a relationship with whispers of the same senario - I find I must read it again to see if there are the warning signs I so dread.
For anyone who is interested in intense literature and can handle the sexual aspects of it - I feel it is a must read.
It will turn you on, turn you inside out, it will make you angry, make you sick, shock you and it will make you cry.
If you can find it, read it.

interesting but troubling

"9 1/2 Weeks" was a disturbing but vaguely powerful book for me when I first read it at 22 years of age. Now an older and wiser man (30 years old) I find it more troubling and offputting. The book deals with a love affair which crosses certain limits and moves into territory best not entered. I wonder to myself today: Why is it that only violence and power get this lady off? Can a man be powerful with a woman and not cross that border wherein it becomes unhealthy? I cannot imagine not being "powerful" with a woman sexually and having it be good; but where is the empathy and sharing of intimacies and softness? I have had plenty of good sex in my life - even great sex! - which without some kind of emotional empathy between myself and my lover will hardly be remembered six months hence. Nevertheless, this book has the ring of truth somehow; but it also reeks of immaturity and an unhealthy immoderation. (I think the heroine was perhaps conditioned by the all-consuming attention paid to her by this powerful man to equate intensity of feeling and sensation with pain and pleasure, mixing the two and moving into areas where the passion would consume itself? This would probably confuse anyone's long-term sexuality!) This book might attract the young and curious who like to flit around the flame; but I think it will fail to persuade those with a bit of common sense and life experience. Although the book is an interesting read, the movie is much easier to empathize with. It is a less raw but more believable piece of fiction/non-fiction. But check out both and make up your own mind!
