Gr 3-6-Chase Manning is hoping to make the Sixth Grade Honors Orchestra next year and tryouts are today. The only problem is that there might not be an Honors Orchestra if the school can't raise enough money by auctioning off an expensive cello at the annual fundraising dinner. When the instrument goes missing, the principal turns to Chase to find the guilty party. Who would want to sabotage the music program? The fact that the story takes place in the course of one day gives a sense of urgency to each chapter as Chase follows the clues to the culprit. The characters and situations are not wholly believable, and the supporting characters lack depth, but kids who have graduated from Scooby-Doo will like Chase's perseverance. Chase Against Time and its sequel Chase for Home are Level Q on the Fountas & Pinnell scale. Both books are ideally suited to be used as read alouds and mentor texts during Reading Workshop units on mystery and "edge-of-seat" fiction because they include numerous examples of end-of-chapter cliffhangers, red herrings, suspects, motives, and other important mystery elements. Excellent book for young readers regardless of gender!

Chase Against Time is a great introduction to the series. The author is a terrific storyteller who balances character with plot to craft a page-turning mystery that speaks to young readers. Chase is given a personal, moral dilemma to work through while at the same time solving the mystery. This book recalls the Henry Wiggen baseball novels by Mark Harris that I read and loved as a high school student. Kudos to Reifman!

AWESOME BOOK!!

I really LOVED this book!!! It is such an awesome mystery.It will have you on the edge of your seat,badly wanting to skip to the end to find out what happens!!! I relate to Chase a little bit because when I grow up I want to be a spy. The title is also a brilliant choice because the boy Chase is trying to find the cello in time, so it's literally a"chase against time", but Chase is also the boy's name, and he's trying to find a stolen cello in a short amount of time so it's kinda like Chase vs Time. A brilliant play on words!!! -SophiaL.

We bought this book because the author had visited my son's school and he got excited about it. Then he read the book and LOVED it. He is actually reading it again now. I hope the author writes more similar books. Thank you!
